"Little Olive"

We are so very sad.
Olive passed away on New Years Day 2012.
She suddenly became ill and the vet has determined that she developed a Liver Shunt.
Her autopsy showed that there were other internal problems as well.

A unique soul crosses our paths once in a while.  Olive is one of those kitties.  This is a hard loss for us to accept.  We fought right along side her for months.  She was loved by so many.  We are planning to set up a special fund / page in her honor.

I am writing about Olive in chronologicial order

* JULY 28, 2011 - THURSDAY *************************************************************************

This small kitten went into a yard and was attacked by the owner's dog. The kitten has lost mobility in it's back legs. I picked the kitten up today in Ontario and she will be going to the vet tomorrow on Friday, July 29th. She has no feeling in her left leg and tail. I have no idea what is going to happen tomorrow but I need to be prepared. I hope that we will be able to fix her, because she is the sweetest kitten... all she does is purr and nuzzle.... please help me help her. Sadly her mommy was run over a couple of nights after Olive was injured and we wonder if mom went wandering to look for her, cause how strange that the mom was killed at this particular time, when she had been seen living on this property with her two kittens and never leaving the premises and now after Olive disappears from her she is found dead in the street. Now the other kitten, Olive's sibling can't be found either. Olive has had a very traumatic week.

*UPDATE* JULY 30, 2011  ************************************************************************************

OLIVE IS HOME... SHE DID NOT HAVE SURGERY... THE CT SCAN DID NOT SHOW ANY BREAKS OR DISLOCATIONS ANYWHERE. THEREFORE IT IS A SOFT TISSUE INJURY AND TIME WILL TELL IF SHE WILL WALK AGAIN OR URINATE ON HER OWN, TIL THEN, I AM HER PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND *BLADDER EXPRESSER*

HER BILL WAS $1,705.50, WE ARE STILL SHORT, WE HAVE RAISED OVER $1000 BUT WE NEED ALOT MORE, I BORROWED A FRIEND'S CREDIT CARD TO SAVE THIS LITTLE GIRL AND NOW I GOTTA PAY THE BILL WHEN IT COMES IN. PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN, EVEN A DOLLAR, AND YOU CAN DO THAT THRU PAYPAL, IT ADDS UP....

*UPDATE* AUGUST 1, 2011 - MONDAY
*********************************************************************

Olive is a wait and see now. I took her outside today to move around... she is very strong in her front arms and moves pretty fast all the while dragging her back legs. I took video that I will llink on this cause page. I found out more about how she was injured. She was most likely asleep amongst the plants in a woman's backyard. The woman was in her backyard with her two dogs and she saw her one dog grab something out of the plants and how our mutual friend described it,"It looked like they were playing "hack e sack" with something and that it was when she realized it was a kitten her dogs were tossing around. She then ran over and saved her.

Please check out this nice press release our friend, Catherine Frazier, wrote regarding Olive today:

Cindy Brady and a Kitten?

LOS ANGELES—It isn’t every day that Cindy Brady turns 50, but time marches on, even for “the youngest one in curls.” Yes, Susan Olsen’s birthday is on August 14, and she has a special birthday wish she would like for her friends and fans to make come true.

Susan is a board member and active volunteer with Encino-based Precious Paws, who along with her son Michael, fosters kittens awaiting adoption to forever homes. But right now one particular kitten has Susan’s attention—and that’s where friends of Susan Olsen and fans of Cindy Brady can help.

Late last week, 6-week-old green-eyed tabby kitten Olive was mauled by dogs in Ontario, and Susan’s birthday wish is for donations to help pay for the veterinary care little Olive needs.

Olive is convalescing with Georgyne La Lone, founder of Encino’s Precious Paws. Late last week Georgyne learned of the tiny kitten who had been living behind a house in an industrial property in Ontario with her mother and a sibling. Olive was found by the property owner being used as a live hackey-sack by her two pet dogs. Long story short, the kitten found her way to Georgyne, who took the tiny tabby to two vets, first Dr. Carol Skaar at Toluca Burbank Dog & Cat Hospital, who then referred the kitten for possible orthopedic surgery to Dr. Jerrold Bausman of Veterinary Specialists of the Valley in Woodland Hills, to see if she could be saved. After x-rays and an MRI, Olive was declared break-free but she has much soft-tissue soreness and is unable to move her back legs. She is also unable to urinate on her own, so Georgyne has learned to express Olive’s bladder to empty the kitten’s bladder. A short video of Olive outdoors for the first time after her mauling, taken on August 1, is posted at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O8Jte6AAsk.

Susan decided the best way she could help with Olive’s expenses was to ask friends and fans to contribute to Precious Paws and Olive by a Causes.com wish.

Susan’s wish page is at
http://wishes.causes.com/wishes/339653?bws=fb_stream_card., and your donation is fully tax deductible. Any funds raised beyond Olive’s veterinary care needs will go toward other pets in need currently in Precious Paws’ guardianship.

How often do we have the opportunity to give a meaningful birthday gift to a Brady?

*UPDATE*  AUGUST 20, 2011  ********************************************************************************

Olive is now peeing and pooping without human assistance.  Yeah!!!  She has begun to wag her tail.  Another Yea!  We continue with the physical therapy which she grumbles about now.  She has started playing a little bit.

*UPDATE*  AUGUST 29, 2011  ********************************************************************************

With Olive, she has no idea of her limits, so she keeps trying....we all need to learn a lesson from Olive's perseverance....don't sell ourselves short....she is determined to use all fours....so should we...

Olive has taken to spending time playing with Colin.  This is the best physical therapy!!!  She is a growly, hissy girly playtime player but she doesn't go an run away from Colin so all is good.

*UPDATE*  SEPTEMBER 1, 2011  *****************************

Olive has started walking on all fours....Very wobbly and unsteady....but she is trying very hard to stay on them while walking.  When she runs though she drags the right leg.  Meanwhile she and Colin wrestle on the floor and she screams like she is being murdered....NOT!!!  She's just that kind of girl!

*UPDATE*  SEPTEMBER 4, 2011
  ***************************************************************************

She was injured on July 24... look how far she has come.... she is not normal but she is getting around on her tippy toes, then will let the right leg drag and then gets it back up under her and walks, & so forth... so is working it and I believe Colin is her motivation... he has kept her active by kicking her butt.... and she kicks his back!

  *UPDATE*  DECEMBER 2011  ***************************

Her right leg is still not very useful.  Olive gets around pretty quickly though.  We love her sad eyes.  Even when she is playing and happy she can turn that sorrowful look on you and your heart will melt.
